Vue.js occupies a sweet spot in the JavaScript framework landscape - more structured than vanilla JavaScript, less complex than Angular, and with a gentler learning curve than React for many developers. Here's why we use it for web applications.
The Progressive Framework
Vue describes itself as a progressive framework, and this is its defining characteristic. You can add Vue to a single page of an existing site, or you can build an entire single-page application with it. You adopt as much or as little as you need.
This progressive nature means Vue works for projects of all sizes. A simple interactive widget on a Laravel-rendered page uses Vue components directly. A complex web application uses Vue Router, Vuex or Pinia for state management, and a full build pipeline.
Why Vue Pairs Well With Laravel
Laravel and Vue have a long history together. Laravel ships with Vue scaffolding support, and the Inertia.js project creates seamless integration where Laravel handles routing and controllers while Vue handles the UI layer. This combination gives you server-side routing with client-side rendering - the best of both approaches.
The Composition API
Vue 3's Composition API organises component logic by concern rather than by option type. Related state, computed properties, and methods live together, making complex components more readable and logic more reusable through composables.
Composables are Vue's answer to React hooks - reusable functions that encapsulate reactive state and logic. A useAuth composable can manage authentication state across your entire application. A useApi composable can standardise API calls with loading states and error handling.
Reactivity Without Complexity
Vue's reactivity system tracks dependencies automatically. When reactive data changes, the components that depend on that data re-render. You don't manually manage subscriptions or memoisation. This makes Vue code predictable - change the data, and the UI updates.
Single-File Components
Vue's single-file component format (.vue files) keeps template, script, and style together. This co-location makes components self-contained and easy to understand. Scoped styles prevent CSS from leaking between components - a common headache in large applications.
Performance
Vue 3's virtual DOM diffing is highly optimised, and the compiler performs static analysis to skip unchanged parts of the template during updates. For most web applications, Vue delivers excellent performance without manual optimisation.
When We Use Vue
At Masterpiece Designs, Vue is our choice for web applications that pair with Laravel backends. The integration is seamless, the developer experience is excellent, and the resulting applications are performant and maintainable. For standalone frontends or projects that require a larger ecosystem, we evaluate on a case-by-case basis.
The Pragmatic Choice
Vue won't win benchmarks against every framework in every scenario. What it offers is a consistently productive development experience, clean and maintainable code, and a framework that gets out of your way while providing the structure you need.
